How to paint your business without closing the doors

By Jason Atkinson · August 11, 2026 · 5 min read

Closing for a week is usually more expensive than the paint job. It is also almost never necessary. Here is how the work gets sequenced around a business that has to keep running.

Phase it, do not blanket it

The instinct is to think of painting as something that happens to a building. In practice it happens to one area at a time. One suite, one floor, one corridor, or one elevation, finished and handed back before the next one opens.

That takes more planning and slightly more time overall, but it means the rest of your space keeps earning while the work runs.

Work when the space is empty

For retail and gyms that usually means nights. For offices it often means weekends. For salon and treatment suites it can mean working around a specific stylist's schedule. None of that is unusual, and it should not carry a penalty tone in the conversation.

We answer the phone around the clock, which makes the scheduling conversation a lot easier than trading voicemails inside business hours.

Contain the work area properly

  • Poly and zip walls where the work area meets the occupied area.
  • Floors protected on the route in and out, not just at the work face.
  • Low odour products where the space is occupied nearby.
  • Ventilation planned rather than improvised.

Containment is what makes the difference between customers noticing a paint job and customers noticing a construction site.

Clean up every day, not at the end

The space goes back to usable at the end of every shift. That is the whole point of phasing, and it is the first thing that slips when a contractor is behind.

Agree the sequence in writing

The scope should say which areas get done in which order and roughly when. Then when something shifts, and something usually does, you are adjusting a plan rather than finding out after the fact.

Tell us how your space runs and we will build the sequence around it, then put it in the written estimate.
